Writing tips during #NanoWrimo

November is National Novel Writing Month and I’ve recorded a few podcast episodes recently sharing some writing tips and advice for writing a novel, which should be helpful if you’re tackling #Nanowrimo!

Writing podcasts are a phenomenal help for me when I’m writing, even in the moments of my day when it feels like I can’t be creative or don’t have time at all to write. I listen while I’m cooking in the kitchen, or out walking in the day, or when I’m driving absolutely anywhere. My podcast playlist is like my own, curated, specialist radio station just for me!

The Writer’s Workshop

This is a fantastic podcast hosted by Will Shindler which really digs into the craft of writing (my favourite kind of podcast).

We spoke about writing speculative fiction as a genre, the importance of a great first line, how to find your voice, why I like starting with the ending, and the infernal novel writing debate: are you a plotter or a pantser? (There’s no wrong way to write! Only different styles.)

I’m a tutor at the worldwide online writing school, The Novelry, and I mention this during the episode, where I mentor writers and help them to complete a draft of their novel and then polish it up ready to be published.

Thanks to Will Shindler and audio producer Lucy Oliva for a very fun and enjoyable episode.

The Bestseller Experiment

I was interviewed by Mark Stay for the iconic writing podcast The Bestseller Experiment. In this episode you’ll learn how an X-meets-Y pitch can help sell your book, what happens when you see similar ideas to yours already out there, and my slightly unique “chain of visuals” plotting!

We also discuss how getting feedback too soon can be counterproductive, which I tell the writers I mentor at The Novelry (the first draft is just for you!), and how I juggle writing around a day job.

With thanks to Mark Stay and Midas PR for a great interview
